The effects of crown thinnings on the leaf area index (LAI) and the relation of LAI to the production of aboveground tree mass in pure stands of Spanish chestnut (Castanea sativa MILL.) in Slovakia are evaluated. The highest values of LAI, production and supply of the aboveground dendromass during a 20-yr stand development were found in pure stands tended by strong crown thinnings with an interval of repetition of 10 years. At the age of 36, LAI is 4.34 ha per ha, aboveground tree mass supply is 265.02 t per ha per year and the mean periodical increment per unit of leaf area is 5.67 g.per square dm per year.
