The role of ethological and environmental research in development of farm animal husbandry systems
1997
Mihina, S.
Behavioral needs of farm animals as well as environmental limits must be respected in farm animal husbandry systems. Research in the Institute of Technology and Economy of Farm Animal Husbandry within the Research Institute of Animal Production in Nitra (Slovakia) is directed to these tasks. The most suitable parameters of housing for different farm animals are found in ethological research. They result on the one hand in concrete designs of parts of barns and building and farm complexes, and on the other in permanent participation in the preparation and innovation of legislation on farm animal protection. From the ecological point of view the institute is seeking the best possibilities of storage and handling of animal excrement. It was shown that welfareand environmental aspects influence each other and must be considered in tandem
