Fractal analysis of soil structure as influenced by tillage treatment

Determination of tillage procedure influence on the soil structure of sandy loam soil was studied by means of fractal analysis. The experimental data referred to the soil subtype Psefitic Cambisol and the soil class of the sandy loam with the 48% rate of sandy grains, 31% silt, 16% clay and 5% mould were used in the present work. The paper represents self-similar fractal as useful model for soil pore set. Fractal dimension was chosen as the main parameter representing the estate of the soil structure. The pore capacity fractal dimension was established by box-counting technique. Three management systems were used to influence a soil structure-conventional tillage, reduced tillage and direct drill. The areal fractal dimensions were evaluated from thin resin impregnated sections of soil by image analysis method. One hundred of surface section images were created for each technology and fractal dimension was determined as a slope of ln-ln plot of number of pores versus size of pores modelled by side of the square. The experimental values of the areal fractal dimension from the individual sets were in the range 1.2689 - 1.8937. The mean values of the areal fractal dimension for pores varied in the range 1.5261 - 1.5298. One way analysis of variance was used for the study of the tillage procedures influence on the variability of the areal fractal dimension on the significant level Ð = 0.1 and multiple range analysis (Scheffe's method) for multiple comparison. The areal fractal dimensions for conventional and reduced tillage were statistically different for the studied soil, accordingly the areal fractal dimension was able to evaluate the influence of tillage procedures on the condition of soil structure
