We analysed by electron microscope the inner organs of 60 cows which originated from regions affected by emissions from smelting works and power plants. The samples for electron microscopy were fixed in 4% glutaraldehyde, 1% osmium tetroxide, washed in cacodylate buffer, dehydrated by ascendant series of alcohol and embedded into AGAR-100 resin. Ultrathin cuts were contrasted by lead citrate and uranyl acetate. The electronogramms were evaluated through the JEM CX-100 II microscope. We found out that liver, kidneys, lungs and milt are affected with various pathological changes in cows reared in polluted environment for a long period. We found vacuolisation and necrobiotic processes of hepatocytes in liver which suggest decreased synthesis of proteins. We noticed marked dilatation of vesicles in endoplasmic reticulum and amplification of lysosome numbers in hepatocytes at increased occurrence of hyperchromatosis of nuclei. Epithelium cells of kidney tubules were affected with vacuolisation of cytoplasm with occurrence of swollen mitochondria and tubules of endoplasmic reticulum. There was high occurrence of lysosomal structures in cytoplasm of epithelial cells of tubules. Lungs were affected with interstitial pneumonia, and marked changes were localised in alveolar septa in peribronchial tissue as well as in alveoles and bronchi. Clusters of hemosiderine conglomerates and homeostasis of red marrow were present in greater amount. Necrobiotic changes in liver, nephrosis in kidneys and interstitial pneumonia in lungs discovered through electron microscope did not manifest themselves in cows clinically
