Several habitats suitable for heliophilous insects were present in Tichá dolina valley (Tatra Mountains) before wind disturbance in November 2004. They were forest meadows and avalanche slopes, the latter habitat in the upper part of the valley. As a result of wind disturbance numerous sun-exposed open patches were created in closed forests. We recorded butterflies along a forest ride in the valley (950 - 1,300 m a.s.1.) in 2005 - 2009. In total, we found 30 butterfly species (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea, (Hesperioidea), of which 9 species (Carterocephalus palaemon, Cupido minimus, Cyaniris semiargus, Polyommatus icarus, Araschnia levana, Argynnis paphia, Boloria selene, Aphantopus hyperantus, Pararge aegeria) are less characteristic for mostly closed spruce forests in the study area. Their populations are likely to gain from habitat change after 2004.
