The antioxidant activity (AO) of methanolic, water and ethyl acetate extracts of different parts of Nigella sativa, N. orientalis and N. damascena (Ranunculaceae) was determined by colorimetric and chemiluminescence methods. The results were compared with the total content of polyphenols and flavonoids measured by means of standard colorimetric method. We found linear correlation between AO activity and the total content of polyphenols. From our results is clear that not only flavonoids are important for AO activity but also other polyphenols. The experiments showed interesting activities of green parts of herbs although nowadays only seeds are used in therapy.
