The energy sector forms a basis of the economic development of a country or a region. The aim of the paper is to analyse the energy sector in the Košice region, focusing on the knowledge potential level of firms and research and educational institutions. The research does not rely only on secondary data; it is based also on knowledge obtained from two interrelated primary surveys. In addition to the analysis of path dependence and the historical development of the energy sector in the Košice region, the paper is focused also on the identification of knowledge dynamics in the energy sector, as well as on the analysis of the science and research in firms and in research and educational institutions. The evaluation of the stated hypotheses is done via the in-depth analysis of the primary and secondary data. The results are as following: it is shown that between two groups - firms and research and educational institutions, as well as within the firm sector, a low degree of cooperation exists; the lack of financial resources is documented as a barrier to create, acquire and disseminate knowledge; and the firms generally do not feel the state policy measures in favour of creating, processing and use of knowledge.
