Growth, development and sexual expression of some local papaya varieties

Of 63 local papaya varieties collected from Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Quang Ninh, Gia Lai, Tien Giang, and So Trang provinces, 10 varieties with some specious characteristics had been evaluated in Gialam- Hanoi during the period of 2008 - 2010. An F1 hybrid papaya variety (Hong Phi) was used as control variety. The study had evaluated a number of criteria as growth, yield, fruit quality of these local varieties and sexual expression at S12 autogamous population generation. The results showed that at S1 generation of autogamous population, hybridizations of hermaphrodite flower x hermaphrodite flower and female flower a hermaphrodite flower for autogamous population without male plants; hybridization of hermaphrodite flower a male flower expressed all types of plant. For hybridization of hermaphrodite flower x hermaphrodite flower from two different local varieties, sexual expression in the F1 generation was similar to those of S1 generation of autogamous population. Some local papaya varieties with specious characteristics which can be used as stating materials for papaya breeding activities, include DBI02, QNI01, IA05, 12-10, TGI03 and STR02.
