2004
WHO, Geneva (Switzerland) eng | UNICEF, New York (USA) eng
83 % of the world's population are using improved drinking water sources, but 1.1 billion people are still without coverage. Progress in sub-Saharan Africa was impressive, moving from 49 % coverage in 1990 to 58 % in 2002. But at this rate it will not meet the MDG target by 2015. An estimated 2.6 billion people lack improved sanitation. Despite major progress in South Asia, more than a third of its population use improved sanitation, coverage in sub-Saharan Africa is only 36 %. Globally, the human population without coverage declined by only 100 million.
