Caught in a trap: identifying the least developed countries
2009
Guillaumont, P.
The United Nations recognized 49 least developed countries (LDCs):low-income countries that suffer from structural handicaps to growth and so deserve special treatment from the international community. Guillaumont assesses the 2 indicators of structural handicaps used to identify LDCS, the human assets index and economic vulnerability index, and considers how they can be improved by aggregating them in 1 index as well as whether both could be combined with per capita income. The book explains why some low-income countries seem to have been caught in a poverty trap while others have escaped.
