Prapasiri Kanchanopas
Toxicity of paraquat to snakehead fish (Ophicephalus striatus Bloch), 3.8-4.0 cm. in length was determined by using static bioassay. The 96-hour LC50 value was 10.90 ppm. There were no significant differences in growth and growth rate between the controls and fish treated within 0.5, 1.0 and 3.00 ppm. paraquat for 14 weeks. Fish in all concentrations of paraquat fed and behaved normally as well as the control during the experimental period. No histological changes related to paraquat were observed in gills, liver, kidney, spleen, intestine, eyes and muscle of fish exposed to paraquat at the level 0.5, 1.0 and 3.0 ppm. for 14 weeks. Fish injected intraperitoneally with paraquat at the concentration of 0.01 milligram per kilogram of body weight did not show any histological change after 24 hours. Histological examination of tissues from fish injected with paraquat at the concentration of 0.05 and 0.1 milligram per kilogram of body weight revealed that liver was severely affected. The hepatocytes were necrotized and accompanied by fatty degeneration and inflammation. Necrotic lesion was also found in the posterior kidney. The remaining tissues including spleen, intestine and muscle were favorable compared with those of controls
