Abundance and distribution of algae as related to some water qualities of ping-wang river basin [Thailand]
1986
Kannika Putthathorn
The abundance of algae was clearly affected by seasonal changes. Its highest density was found in the period of dry flow season and became less and less in the early and late wet flow seasons. It is types of community (urban and river basin size) did not seem to have any direct effect on the abundance of algae, but the environmental factors, availibility of nutrients, and population seemed to play a more important role on it. The distribution of algae did not show any definite pattern. Diatom i.e. Fragilaria and Navicula were the genera consistently found throughout the area. However, some algae genera were affected by different degree of water pollution. Nitzschia, Phormidium and Oscillatoria, seemed to grow well in moderately polluted water. Euglena, Trachelomonas could well tolerate high organic polluted water. When the diversity index of algae was considered in relation to its abundance and water quality, only Chrysophyta showed definite correlation. The abundance and distribution of algae in this area provided some information on the water condition. Even this river passed it seemed to usable.
