Cultivation of red algae, Gracilaria verrucosa

Three methods of cultivation of red alga, Gracilaria verrucosa, which is one of the important agarophytes, were demonstrated at Si Chang Marine Research and Training Station, Chonburi Province. Net cultivation methods with fixed positions and with floats were employed. A semi-closed culture system in fiberglass tank was also used. Two selected sites were chosen. The cultures only lasted a short period and with unsuccessful results. Major constraints of the cultures are trong wave actions, freshwater-runoff, grazing intensity from sea urchins and the unthealthy seedlings.
