Two weedings, at 15 and 30 days after emergence, are recommended for groundnut. Even this is practiced, the fields are often still weedy. Previous study on flowering of groundnut cultivars Tainan 9 and Moket Revealed that the first flush of flowers, from which most of mature pods were derived, occurred within 60 days. This suggests the possibility of another weeding after 60 days. To see whether such a weeding would cause any effect on groundnut yield, a study was conducted at Khon Kaen in the rainy season of 1986 comparing different times of hand weeding and application of a post emergence herbicide with unweeded and weed free treatments. No difference in shelling percentage and number of pods/plant was found among treatments, but seed size of groundnut from the weeding treatment was significantly larger than that of the un weeded treatment. No weeding caused about 60 % yield reduction both from the direct effect of weed competition and from the high incidences of Aspergillus crown rot and Sclerotium stem rot. Weeding after 60 days tended to give only a slight increase in groundnut yield. However, in this experiment, most of the weeds were broad leaf weeds. Further studies should be conducted in different environments and different types of weed population.
