Role of research and extension in rice production
1987
Patamawadee Pochanukul
Benefit from rice research in Thailand is high and the impact of rice research is more important than extension. According to the empirical results, the rice research and extension had positive impacts on the land productivity and farm household productivity of the main crop. Their effects on the second crop were insignificant. This might be because of the substitution of new varieties and modern techniques for traditional varieties in the main crop had just taken place during the period of this study. Therefore, the average yield of the main crop increased. In the second crop, only high yielding varieties (HYV) are employed. The insignificant effect implied that the rice research and extension could neither raise the potential yields above the existing level nor release constraints that suppress the actual yield. The constraints such as an irrigation problem and high fertilizer-paddy price ratio were more serious in the second rice crop because fertilizers and irrigation are necessary.
