Database needs for conservation in Thailand

Conservation database had been established at the Conservation Data Center, Center for Wildlife Research, Faculty of Science, Mahidol University with World Wildlife Fund support. The database stores information on vertebrate species, habitats, and protected areas in Thailand. The program processes the data and calculates area of habitat remaining per region and per species, species endangered status, and probable occurrence in protected area not reported from. Printouts include information organized either by species, protected area, bioprovince or by habitat. The database is designed to serve needs of conservation planning, public education, research, environmental impact analysis and international conservation project planning. There are needs for additional databases in Thailand which might be organized in a coordinated network. Additional databases might cover wetlands, plants, literature references, trade and other aspects. A national network should be decentralized, intercompatible, open to all potential users, and have a means to communicate information needs and availability.
