Studies of bacterial microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract of cultured tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon)

Bacterial isolates from specimens of the gastrointestinal tract of cultured tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon) were characterized and identified into 4 genera as follows : Vibrio, Klebsiella, Yersinia and Pseudomonas. The Vibrio was uniformly the most quantitatively significant genus of 10(exp.5) - 10(exp.7) CFU/g. The bacterial isolates presented in the gastrointestinal tract were influenced by the water of the culture tanks. In relation to NaCl requirement, the bacterial populations were halotolerant which were able to grow in media added 5 % NaCl. The extensive capability of the bacterial isolates to digest gelatin and starch suggests a role in the participation in the degradation of the nutrients into smaller molecules which are useful for the prawn's growth.
