Most giant tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon, Fabricius) post larval nursing farms in Chachoengsao and Chonburi provinces are backyard business. Their number increased rapidly following the "booming period" of the shrimp demand in oversea markets since 1986 and reached 85 % of the total in the country in 1987. At present, the nursing farms are facing serious problems, namely sea-water pollution, the breakout of post larva disease, high cost of shrimp diet, equipments and antibiotics and the downturn of post larva price. The pollution causes a low production yield and diseases; this seems to be related to the Eastern Seaboard Industrial Development project. The rest are mainly due to a sharp increase in demand for those necessary items and limited oversea markets. Without urgent supports from government, most of the nursing farms will certainly be pushed out of the business; the sole survivors should be only the larger ones. This situation will inevitably damage all house-hold industry in the two provinces and allow big companies to control the business.
