Evaluation of teak provenance trails in Thailand I. Provenance trail at Huai Tak Teak Planting, Lampang [Thailand]
1986
Khongsak Phinyophusaruk (Royal Forestry Dept., Bangkok (Thailand). Silviculture Div.)
15 - year old teak provenance trail planted at Huai Tak Teak plantation, Ngao, Lampang was subject to assessment using scoring procedures. The assessment was made on eight characters considered to be of relatively economical importance. Estimated genotype values were computed for individual characters. Provenance performance was judged on the basis of three groups of characters namely growth, quality and health respectively. Provenance variation was clearly demonstrated. Of the total 30 provenances tested, seven provenances were genetically superior to the others and appeared to be most suitable as plantation materials at the test site judging from their consistant performance in all three characters. Finally it is recommended that further study of teak provenance variation be carried out and restricted to the best seven provenances so as to be able to draw more definite conclusions which provenances are best suited for plantation programmes. These provenances and a few other second best should also be incluced in the improvement programme of the species.
