Preharvesting treatment of mepiquat chloride on vase-life of Aster ericoides cv. Monto Casino
1990
Chulika Kraisuriyangkoon
'Monto Casino' asters were sprayed daily with 0,25 and 50 ppm mepiquat chloride for 4 consecutive days and harvesting was done 6 days after the last treatment. One group of cut flowers was vased immediately and the rests were stored at 4 deg.celsius for 7 and 14 days. After storage, the flowers were brought out to observe the vase-life quality. All treatments were placed in 500 ml tap water and held at room conditions of 31 deg.celsius and 65 % RH. The vase-life quality of those sprayed with mepiquat chloride was not significantly different when compared to the non-sprayed treatments. Non-storage asters had the longer vase-life and the quality of petals, leaves, water-placed flower stems, secondary flower stems and flower necks better than the cold-stored ones. Flower sprayed with mepiquat chloride and cold stored about 14 days had the tendency of longer vase-life than the non-sprayed treatment. Treatment with 50 ppm showed better quality of petals and seemed to have longer vase-life than the one treated with mepiquat chloride 25 ppm.
