Effects of photoperiod and ethephon on bulbing of multiplier onion from Taiwan

Bulbs of multiplier onion from Taiwan were grown between January and March 1988 in the experimental field of Horticulture Department, Kumpangsean Campus, Kasetsart University. The result showed that long day period stimulated bulb formation of mutiplier onion. Leaf growth declined while fresh and dry bulb weight were relatively increased by long day effects, both fresh and dry bulb weight/leaf weight ratio and bulb dry matter percentage were increased as well as photoperiods increased. Ethephon did not directly stimulate bulb formation. But ethephon 2000 ppm made the best growth of multiplier onion, giving largest bulb. The higher concentration other than 2000 ppm the growth of those was certainly decreased. This study did not show the effects of interaction between photoperiods and different ethephon concentration.
