Root growth of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] under irrigation gradient

Root densities of all four cultivars were higher at R5 (beginning seed) than at R3 (beginning pod) and R7 (beginning maturity). Soybeans receiving moderate quantity of water (W3) had highest root density. With large amount of water applied (W5) root density was high between the depth of 0-0.2 meter. At the lower depths (0.4-1 m) greater root densities were found under decrease in the amount of water supply (W3 and W1). Early maturity cultivar (NW 1) had lower root density than SJ 2 and SJ 5 (medium maturity) and CM 001-1 (late maturity) at all soil depths and irrigation regimes, resulting in lower water extraction, higher leaf temperature and lower water use efficiency and ultimately lower yield than medium and late cultivars.
