Varietal trial of 5 pickling cucumbers grown under staking and non-staking condition

Five pickling cucumber lines were yield-tested under staking and non-staking between May 25 to July 26, 1990 at Agricultural Research and Training Center, Lampang. The design of the experiment was factorial in RCB with 3 replications. The results showed the effect of cultural technique on all characters, except yield per rai, number of fruit per plant, the length of fruit and harvesting period. The interaction effects between varieties and cultural technique were significant in some characters such as number of fruit per plant, thinness of flesh, harvesting date and harvesting period. The effects of varieties were detected in most characters, except weight per fruit, width of fruit and number of branches per plant. "Number 1" variety showed the highest yield per rai followed by "Aeroplane" and "Number 4" varieties. "Number 1" and "Number 4" varieties were suitable for pickling cucumber since they set green fruit, small pit and thick flesh, especially on early harvesting date. "Aeroplane" and "Flying Child" varieties were good for fresh market owing to their pit and thin flesh. Harvesting period, width of pit and number of fruit per plant had significant positive effect on yield per rai while thinness of flesh and harvesting date were negatively correlated to yield.
