The main objectives of the project are 1) to conduct farming systems research by developing a methodology to integrate crop and live-stock production suitable to conditions in Northeast Thailand. The methology is expected to be applied where similar conditions exist and 2) to encourage collaborative system research between concerned organizations in farming systems concept in order to integrate activities towards the small farmers. The characteristics of the research is based on the system concept including focussing to small farmers, holistic, dynamic and integrated disciplinaries. The methology being tested follows the strategy of site selection and description, design of research, testing of technology and later on, pre-production program. The research activities consist of studying on crop-animal production with their integral system, and socio-economic impacts of technology are also investigated. Ban Don Daeng, Tambon Koke Sam Rarn, Amphoe Ban Phai, Khon Kaen, has been selected as the testing site. Farmers are divided into three groups based on their farm activities including cultivated area, number of animals and their main source of income, then, catagorised into crop-based, animals-based. In each group, cropping patterns, animal production and socio-economic aspects have been studied.
