Hygienic condition of vendor soft drinks available in Bangkok

Survey on hygienic condition of 360 samples of vendor soft drinks marketed in congested areas in Bangkok was conducted during December 1987 to November 1988. 76.3, 43.3, 92.5 and 67.2 % of total samples were contaminated with coliforms, E. Coli, yeasts and molds, respectively. Pathogenic bacteria, which were S. aureus, C. Perfringens and Salmonellae, had been detected in 23.6, 64.8 and 0.8 % of total samples, respectively. Significant relationship of the presence of coliforms and S. aureus in the same samples was found (p.05). But the presence of coliforms and C. perfringens was not significanlty related (p.05). 20.3 % of total samples contained saccharin and 55.3 % of the samples in which was found excess amount of benzoic acid. Fruit juices and soft drinks in which colors are found contaminated with excess amount of colors 10.8 and 8.7, respectively. Especially, in the samples of tea and coffee in which colors are not allowed to be added, the colors were detected up to 90 and 14.7 %, respectively
