Estimation of heritability of disease resistance, body weight and body length of Thai walking catfish, Clarias macrocephalus
1996
Dennapa Rasatapana
Heritabilities were estimated in Thai walking catfish using nested breeding scheme. Each of twelve males was mated with 2 different females, resulted in 24 full-sib families. Fish rearing was done in concrete tanks and was replicated twice. Resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila was assessed at 93 days after hatching by peritoneal injection of LD50 96 hours dose of bacterial suspension (1.38*10*[8) cell/ml, 0.1 ml/10 g BW.) and survival rate was investigated 96 hours after the injection. Heritabilities of disease resistance were estimated: h*[2)S=2.34+-0.07; h*[2)D=0.15+-0.22 and h*[2)(S+D)=1.09+-0.12. Heritabilities of body weight were: h*[2)S=2.01+-0.95 and 3.07+-1.26; h*[2)D=0.31+-0.51; h*[2)(S+D)=1.16+-0.58 and 1.61+-0.84 respective to ages of 53 and 78 days. Genetic correlation between body weigth and body length at 53 days and 78 days for Clarias macrocephalus were rG(S)=0.560+-0.326 and 0.842+-1.779; rG(D)=0.748+-0.219 and 1.276+-0.627; rG(S+D)=1.106+-0.774 and 0.861+-0.580.
