Performance of crossbred yearling heifer fed with paragrass-based ration containing dried chicken manure and leucaena leaf meal

Nine crossbred yearling heifer were randomly and equally assigned in three dietary treatments in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The study evaluated their growth and economic response to dry chicken manure (DCM) and leucaena leaf meal (LLM) as part of a protein source in supplementary concentrate mixture. The concentrate and roughage were given to the amimals at the rate of 0.5 and 10.0 percent of the body weight, respectively. This was adjusted monthly based on body weight of the animal. No significant differences were found in the voluntary dry matter intake, weight gain and feed conversion efficiency. Also, no significant differences were observed in the apparent digestibility coefficient of dry matter and its components among treatment groups. However, simple cost analysis showed that the lowest feed cost per kilogram gain in weight was obtained from animals feed with concentrate containing DCM (p0.05). Results of this study suggest that DCM is a better protein source in concentrate mixture than LLM. However, both feed stuff proved to reduce significantly feed cost of heifers.
