New approach using pyrantel tartrate to control Ascariasis in pigs

Ascaris suum is the most common internal parasitic infection of pigs. Under certain management situations i.e., total confinement, concrete floored facilities, it may be the only internal parasitic infection. Deleterious effects of larval migration give rise to the greatest economic losses caused by internal parasites in the swine industry. Standard methods of treatment concerning timing of treatment and purge type anthelmintic drugs have been proven largely ineffective in reducing economic losses and the incidence of infection. We propose the use of drug-abbreviated infections to immunize swine. Swine receive pyrantel in their feed when they are continuously exposed to infective eggs normally occurring in their surroundings. After 3 to 6 weeks, organ damage has been minimized and animals acquire resistance that is effective against subsequent exposures to infective eggs after the drug is withdrawn. Choice of anthelmintic agent is of importance since some agents appear to be immunosuppressive.
