Pineapple production of farmers under the contract farming system in Chon Buri province, 1995

Objectives of this research were to study farmers' socio-economic characteristics in Chon Buri province, farmers' pineapple production through contract farming system, the difference of income, farm size, amount of labor in family, number of year of pineapple production, group membership, pineapple production, the problem in pineapple production through contract farming system. The samples were 176 case. The data were collected by interviewing. Statistics used for data analysis were percentage, mean and t-test. Most of the farmers were male with average age 42.91 years and the level of education were primary school. The average years of pineapple production, amount of labor in family, farm size, yield, income were 7.73 years, 2.61 persons, 51.13 rais, 167.6 ton/years and 264,539.77 baht/years respectively. A half of farmers were group member. The pineapple farmers obtained suggestions and supports from the Siam Food Products Public Company Limited. The farmers' production problems were lack of labors and capital, unsuitable growing area, expensive fertilizer but low quality and unknowledge in production. The farmers solved those problems by hiring expensive labor, searching loans from Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, leveling the land and fertilizer application. Farmers needed officer's help to decrease the cost of fertilizer and to transfer the knowledge. The test of hypothesis showed that the degrees of correctness of production practices were varied with income, farm sizes, household labor and years of production of farmers.
