Pollutions loading from an intensive tiger shrimp farm

Pollution loading from an intensive tiger shrimp farm size of 496 rais, total 94 ponds which located at Ranot district, Songkhla province. Thailand, was studied during January-July, 1992. Water samples were collected from inflow and outflow canal. Precipitation, seepage, evaporation and inflow volume were observed. The result showed that this farm pumped in a sea water in an average rate of 438 tons/rai/day. The average precipitation was 2.3 tons/rai/day. The evaporation was averaged 7.1 tons/rai/day/. The seepage was averaged 106.9 tons/rai/day. While an outflow volume was estimated about 326 tons/rai/day. A comparison test on an average of pollution loading were showed a significantly difference (p0.05) between inflow and outflow in the variable of, nitrite-nitrogen (0.002 and 0.005 kg/rai/day), total ammonia-mitrogen(0.030 and 0.095 kg/rai/day), biochemical oxygen demand(1.02 and 1.99 kg/rai/day), chlorophyll a (0.003 and 0.017 kg/rai/day), and total inorganic nitrogen (0.040 and 0.1083 kg/rai/day). The net loading of those variables were 150, 217, 95, 467 and 171 percent of inflow loading, respectively. However, the loading of phosphorus compound, chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solid, organic nitrogen, total nitrogen, and nitrogen, and nitrate-nitrogen in an inflow and outflow water were showed a non significantly difference (p0.05). The net loading of these parameters ranged from 12 percent decreasing-37 percent increasing of inflow loading. In order to reduce the impacts of disposal water from the intensive tiger shrimp farm to the water receiving areas, we ought to play an attention to the water treatment system which have a high ability to decrease the amount of nitrogen compound especially total ammonia, phytoplankton, and increase to level of dissolved oxygen in the disposal water.
