Evaluation of the performance of goats and the quantity and quality of waste produced when fed with increasing levels of Leucaena leucocephala

Basal diet of Guinea grass (Panicum maximum) and rice bran was replaced with four levels (15, 30, 45, 60 %) of Leucaena leucocephala (LL) leaves for stalled, newly weaned male goats (Katjang X Nubian). The goats were fed for 13 weeks on a daily basis of 4 % dry matter per kilogram body weight adjusted after the weekly weighing. Solid and liquid wastes were collected and separately analyzed chemically for total Kjeldahl nitrogen and total phosphorus content. Results showed that there was a positive relationship between the level of addition of LL to the basal diet. The mean daily weight gain of the goats ranged from 55.2-99.6 grams per day. The amount of nitrogen produced from solid and liquid wastes (grams/kilogram body weight) increased from 0.28 to 0.56 while phosphorus decreased (0.3-0.16) with the increasing level of LL in the diet. The amount of nitrogen and phosphorus in the wastes was directly proportional to the amount in the diet. Collectable nitrogen varied positively (20.9-37.8 %) to the amount of LL in the diet while phosphorus levels (72.7-56.5 %) was inversely proportional to the level of LL. More nitrogen was recovered in the liquid waste (57-64 %), while phosphorus was collected as solid waste. The mean N:P ratio also increased with the presence of Leucaena leucocephala in the diet ranging from 1.0-3.6 from treatments 1 to 5 respectively.
