Studies of culture of Moina macrocopa using organic and inorganic inputs

Five experiments were conducted in outdoor concrete tanks over a five month period to investigate the feasibility of developing a Moina culture system using buffalo manure, chicken manure, rice bran plus fish wastes (1:2), septage and inorganic fertilizers as inputs. A factorial experiment (Experiment 1) conducted with 5.7 g/cubic m and 11.4 g/cubic m loadings of buffalo manure, chicken manure and rice bran plus fish wastes (1:2) did not yield a high Moina production. A high initial loading of 566 g/cubic m of rice bran plus fish wastes (1:2) followed by the subsequent loading of 75.5 g/cubic m gave a significantly higher Moina production than either buffalo or chicken manure inputs. The third experiment was conducted in factorial design with two levels of shading and two levels of aeration in the tanks loaded with 566 g/cubic m of rice bran plus fish wastes (1:2) indicated that unshaded aerated tanks gave a significantly higher production than those of other treatments. The subsequent loading of 75.5 g/cubic m of rice bran showed a negative effect on Moina production. The fourth experiment designed to rank the effect of some selected inorganic/organic inputs and their mixtures on Moina production. The Experiment 4 revealed that the tanks loaded with rice bran plus fish wastes (1:2) together with inorganic fertilizers (urea (46-0-0), N-P-K (16-20-0), triple superphosphate (0-46-0)) after inoculation of Chlorella prior to Moina introduction enhanced Moina production. The loading of tanks with the rice bran plus fish wastes (1:2) with inorganic fertilizers and Chlorella inoculation gave a mean calculated Moina yield of 155 g/tank in Experiment 5 even though this was only 39.5 % of total gross yield.
