1995

Objectives of present research were to study the changing of forest area in Doi Inthanon National Park, Mae Ping National Park, Ramkamhaeng National Park, Nam Tok Mae Surin National Park, Srisatchanalai National Park and Wieng Kosai National Park for measuring the accomplishment in forest protection and some factors affecting changes areas. The study of the average forest area changes in the national parks mentioned above was based on the different forest maps in year 1982, 1985 and 1991 from Royal Forest Department. Correlation analysis was used to determine factors related to changes in forest areas. The current result revealed that the objective of national park establishment for forest area protection was accomplished at some levels. From six study cases, there were positive signs of increasing forest area in the following four national parks: Doi Inthanon, Mae Ping, Srisatchanalai and Wieng Kosai but decreasing trends of forest area in Ramkamhaeng and Nam Tok Mae Surin National Parks. From the correlation analysis of various factors related to the encroachment of forest area, it was found that budget, numbers of protection units, pistols, staffs and law-suits had positive effects to the increase of forest area in national parks that have already had management plans and no communities settled inside. In contrast, in the national parks which have local inholders and do not have management plan, negative results of decreasing forest area were experienced instead.
