Developmental variation of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill]. I. Ontogenetic study of pre-anthesis development

Experiment was conducted at Kamphaeng Saen Campus of the Kasetsart University in rainfed late rainy season (Sept.-Dec. 1991). The main objective was to determine for the ontogenetic variation of pre-anthesis development of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) and the extent to which crop improvement would be exploited. Ten soybean genotypes were then employed. The resultsed revealed the significant differences of the duration of each of the preanthesis phases sowing to floral initiation (SFI), floral initiation to first open flower(FISF) and sowing to first open flower(SF), leaf number(LN) and dry matter(DM) at flowering. Variation in population means for the pre-anthesis development was greatest in FISF than SFI. Although flowering time mean which reflected the contribution of both the SFI and FISF suggested that, in general, short SFI lines would flower earlier than the long SFI lines. Inverted ranked order of a given line for both phases was also detected suggesting that lines differed substantially in FISF phase and it was not necessary that short SFI lines will having short FISF. Generally, lines that having long SFI and/or SF tended to produce more leaves and dry matter at flowering but having slower vegetative growth (i.e., low phyllochron interval and leaf appearance rate). However, the exceptional was also detected such as in the cases of a line selected from the cross Clark 63 X SJ2(no.23) SJ4 and KUSL20004 indicating that early vigor growth and high dry matter production before anthesis could also be achieved from early vegetative developing lines. It was suggested that yield improvement of soybean for the short growing season environments could be done through the modification and selection for a more appropriate pre-anthesis development.
