Study on changing in cytokinin-like substances prior to flowering in stem apexs of lychee (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) was conducted at Doi Pui Research Station, Chiangmai Province. The samples were collected every two weeks during 15 November to 15 January 1997. Flower initiation started from 16 December 1996 by determining anatomically technique on the sample collected at shoot apexs. Analysis of cytokinin-like substances using soybean hypocotyl callus bioassay was done on the same flower initiation date samples and found that cytokinin-like substances in both flowering and non flowering tree apex were not significantly different. In flowering trees, cytokinin-like substances were increased 2 and 4 weeks after flower initiation on 31 December 1996 and 15 January 1997 respectively. In non flowering trees, cytokinin-like substances were not increased in all treatments. The various kind of cytokinins were preliminary studied by High Performance Liquid Chromatography on terminal stem parts, vegetative stem apex, flowering stem apex, flower inflorescences and two weeks fruit. Non cytokinins were detected in all materials.
