Biology of Liza subviridis (Valencieunes, 1836) in Songkhla Lake and adjacent areas

Length frequency distribution, age, growth, sex ratio, size maturity, distribution of stage maturity and spawning period, nursery ground, length-weight relationship and condition factor of the green-back mullet (Liza subviridis) in 4 areas of Songkhla Lake and adjacent coastal area were studied from October 1991-September 1993. Length-frequency distribution was determined on mode and mean analysis. Parameter of age and growth were estimated by ELEFAN, estimated value of L infinity = 31.825 cm K = 0.623 per year. These values were used in Von Bertalanffy equation. The annual average in area 1 to area 4 of male:female sex ratio were 1:1.5, 1:2, 1:4.5 and 1:8 respectively. Maturity of male in each area examined were similarly, however maturity of female at stage 5 and 6 in area 1 and 2 were higher than area 3 and 4 significant (P0.05), and spawning at 44-50 percent of total sample. Spawning period of area 1 was in September-October, in January-March and May-June in area 2. The smallest spawning size male and female were 11.6 and 17 cm in total length respectively. Nevertheless, mature male and female (stage 6) were found at 25 and 35 percent in other months. Fry were found throughout the year in area 2 except area 3 and 4. The condition factor show that Liza subviridis can well-being lived in widely rang of salinity, pH, DO and alkalinity. Thus length-weight relationship in 1991-1993 was not different in 1986.
