Comparative study on the utilization of dry or ensiled water hyacinth in lambs

Experiment was conducted to determine the nutritive value and utilization of water hyacinth ensiled with yeast culture (Candida utilis) compared to dried water hyacinth. Change Over Design was applied. Two groups of three lambs (average weight 32.7 kg) were fed 7 days for each roughage. The results showed that ensiled water hyacinth had higher (P0.05) dry matter and crude protein than did dried water hyacinth. The organic matter, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) of ensiled and dried water hyacinth were non-significantly different (P0.05). The utilization of water hyacinth as roughage source in lambs showed that the digestibility of crude protein in ensiled water hyacinth was higher (P0.05) than that in dried water hyacinth. The digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, NDF and ADF in the two roughages were similar (P0.05).
