Study of wildlife vertebrate diversity at Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary, Chaiyaphum Province was conducted from 1 April 1998 through 1 April 1999. The study objectives included surveying wildlife vertebrate species, producing a checklist with abundance, conservation status and habitat relationships and addressing conservation problems. The results indicate that 546 wildlife vertebrate species inhabit this area, comprising of mammals (10 orders, 27 families, 54 genera, 65 species), birds (16 orders, 50 families, 179 genera, 327 species), reptiles (3 orders, 17 families, 47 genera, 64 species), amphibians (1 orders, 5 families, 11 genera, 21 species) and fishes (7 orders, 22 families, 51 genera, 69 species). The main habitat type was hill evergreen forest and some other small areas of semi-evergreen forest followed by deciduous forest, savana and tropical grassland, forest plantation, caves and limestone rock outcroppings, water areas, villages and old clearings. Several species occurred in all habitat types but some species were confined only within one type and were rated as very rare species. According to the Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act 1992, 3 of these species are preserved and 367 species are protected. Based on the Status of Wildlife in Thailand List (1997), Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary includes 2 extinct in the wild, 6 critically endangered, 8 endangered, 22 vulnarable, 15 near-threatened, 2 data deficient, 1 threated species in the wild and 1 endemic species of Thailand. Based on the 1996 IUCN Red list of Threatened Animals, Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary has 1 critically endangered, 4 endangered and 18 vulnarable species.
