The aim of this study conducted for 12 months (January-December 1999) was to investigate water quality of Mae-Sa stream in Chiang Mai. Concentration of Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Ammonia were used as indices while water quality was classified in accordance with the standard of surface water declared by the National Environment Committe. The results showed that water quality of this stream ranked from second to fourth category of water resource. The water quality varied not only due to the change of physical and biological properties of the water resource itself but also due to the pollution caused by the contamination of inorganic and chemical substances used by farmers and residues released from tourists' sites. However, the overall water quality of the Mae-Sa stream was in the level that could not create pollution since this water-shed had not been disturbed by urban communities. Therefore, the water from this stream is relatively clean and safe for household consumption after proper treatment.
