Avian malaria outbreaks in layer in Nakhon Si Thammarat province: Case report

During July 1996 to Murch 1997, there were 3 outbreaks of avian malaria in layers in 3 Aphur of Naknon Si Thammarat province, The layers, 70-168 days of age showed clinical signs of depression, loss of appetite, greenish diarrhea, severe anemia and death. The mobidity rate and mortality rate were 52.8 percent and 13.7 percent respectively. The main gross lesions were enlarged liver and spleen and pale kidney with hemorrhage. Plasmodium gallinarum was found in the blood smears. The infected flocks were treated with chloroquine in drinking water 10 mg/kg body weight in the first day and followed by 5 mg/kg body weight for 2 days. The response to chloroquine was good.
