Bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) virus was isolated from heparinized blood of a cow having a high fever in an outbreak of the disease by inoculating 1-3 day-old suckling mice intracerebrally and hamster lung (HmLu) cell line. In suckling mice, antibody response was detected in the 2nd passage and nervous sign was shown in the 3rd passage. In HmLu cell, the virus produced cytopathic effect (CPE) in the 2nd passage and high concentration inoculum did not produce CPE. The new isolate was confirmed as BEF virus by cross neutralization test using reference virus and immune serum from Japan. The neutralization index of the immune serum were 2.75-3.0.
