Problems upon the survival of wildlife resource in protected areas under the management plan projects

During the periods of the Sixth and Seven National Social and Economic Development Plans (1987-1991 and 1992-1996), the Faculty of Forestry, Kasetsart University has contracted with the Royal Forest Department to carry out the Management Plan Projects of nine National Parks and seven Wildlife Sanctuaries. The result from direct and indirect methods of observation in the 16 protected areas reflected that the causes of wildlife destructions composed of poaching, fishing, livestock raising, illegal logging, minor product gathering, burning and shifting cultivation. Each problem contributes both immediate and long-term pressure upon the survival of the remaining wildlife species, especially those threatened and endangered species, such as: elephant, guar, banteng, tapir, goral, Fea's barking deer, white-winged duck, green peafowl, rufous-necked hornbills, big-headed turtle, crocodile salamander and so on. In order to meet the conservation goal of the country many basic knowledge about the species are needed for a suitable planning.
