Fourteen species of ants (Hymenoptera : Formicidae) were randomly sampled by forceps collection from a longkong plantation in Songkhla, South Thailand, from January to December 1998. The ant species with more than 100 individuals, representing a predominantly high population, were as follows : Pheidologeton diversus (Jerdon), Monomorium destructor (Jerdon), M. floricola (Jerdon), Monomorium sp. and Oecophylla smaragdina (Fabricious). The last species was observed throughout the year. It was also shown that ant populations found on trunk bark were significantly higher than those found on twig bark (P0.01) especially, P. diversus, O. smaragdina, M. destructor and Monomorium sp.. This might be due to ant-prey relationships in terms of food source.
