Appropriate methods for finishing dairy beef cattle: I. Suitable roughages and protein levels in concentrate

Twenty four Holstein Friesian crossbred male calves at the age of 4 months were used in this experiment. They were allocated into 6 treatment combinations of 2*3 Factorail Experiment in completely Randomized Design with 2 sources of roughage (green grasses and urea-treated rice straw) and 3 levels of protein in concentrate (12, 14 and 16 percent). The period of finishing these calves were 38 weeks. It was found that calves fed urea-treated rice straw had higher growth rate than those fed green grasses (479.61 vs 330.51 g/h/d). Meanwhile calves received 12, 14 and 16 percent protein in concentrate did not show significant differences in growth performance (449.72, 378.29 and 387.18 g/h/d, respectively). There were slightly different in concentrate consumption of calves fed 3 levels of protein. However, dry matter intake of calves fed urea-treated rice straw was higher than those fed green grasses (2.65 kg/h/d vs 1.73 kg/h/d). Differences in carcass characteristics together with carcass composition of these cattle at the end of finishing period were not found.
