Paper colour test was used to estimate cholinesterase activity in serum. The determination was done comparing normal catfish serum and in catfish serum in the presence of methyl parathion. Normal serum changed color of the strip paper from blue to yellow rapidly, whereas methyl parathion treated serum strip paper from blue to yellow rapidly, whereas methyl parathion treated serum with a low cholinesterase activity, needed either more time for the colour to change or it hardly changed at all. There was a good correlation between this method and the conventional method used in clinical laboratories, since the time required for the colour to change was related to the level of enzyme activity. The advantages of this screening method are rapid and there is no need to have a sophisticated instrument. All the chemicals and materials are easily incorporated into a small kit that can be carried easily in the field practice.
