Effects of an immunostimulant "Beta-glucan (MacroGard)" was carried out using three shrimp sizes with average weight of 0.6, 1.5 and 6.5 g for 3 experimental groups, respectively. Shrimps were fed diets containing MacroGard at 0, 0.25, 0.50 and 1.0 g/kg feed for 11 weeks. The effect of MacroGard on growth and feed performances were observed from experiment 1, for group feeding trials. The results showed that supplementation of MacroGard at different levels in diets had no effect on growth, survival and feed conversion of shrimp. Resistance to pathogenic bacteria (Vibrio harveyi) was assessed after both small and large sizes of experimental shrimp received test diet for 6 and 5 weeks, respectively. Increasing levels of the immunostimulant in the diet resulted in increasing survival rate of shrimp in both sizes. Survival of shrimp receiving MacroGard at 0, 0.25, 0.50 and 1.0 g/kg feed were 50, 68, 69 and 81 percent in small shrimp and 33, 33, 60 and 73 percent in large shrimp, respectively. Both groups of shrimp that received MacroGard at 1.0 g/kg feed showed the highest total hemocyte count and superoxide anion production. Bacterial clearance ability of shrimp after receiving MacroGard for different periods was also tested. After 6 weeks, the shrimp receiving the MacroGard at 1.0 g/kg feed showed that highest efficiency of clearance ability. Whereas, shrimp receiving MacroGard at lower levels showed similar results. After 11 weeks feeding, clearance ability of shrimp receiving all levels MacroGard of was similar and higher than that of the control group.
