Toxic effects of 6 pesticides (2 insecticides, 2 herbicides and 2 fungicides) on the growth of N2-fixing blue green algae, Anabaena TISTR 950114, Anabaena sp. E. TISTR 950118, Anabaena 950101 , Anabaena sp.J. 950111, Nostoc 9, Nostoc 12 , Nostoc 19, Nostoc 41, Nostoc 44 and Nostoc 47, were studied, and the results showed that these algae were diversely sensitive to the pesticide. The results showed that Paraquat was the most toxic pesticide, and lower series of toxic were Butachlor+Propanil, Mancozep, Captan, Cabaryl and Monocrotophos, respectively. In view of the importance of N2 -fixing blue-green algae in the maintenance of the N-content and fertility of paddy soils, the use of Paraquat and Butachlor + propanil, as pesticides, should be avoid, Captan, Carbaryl and Monocrotophos, may be used in conjunction with biofertilizer. In fact, resistance to pesticides varies widely with the algal strain. More effort has to be taken when isolating and screening pesticide resistant strains of algae for use as biofertilizer. To ensure the usefulnewss of biofertilizer, mixed cultures of pesticide-tolerant algal strains should be applied.
