Control mechanism of rubber latex HMG CoA reductase

Rubber biosynthesis pathway was found to be under control by a key regulatory enzyme called HMG CoA Reductase (HMGR). The rubber yield was correlated positively to the HMGR activity level. Regulation of HMGR activity was influenced by Protein kinase/phosphatase (PrK/PrP) system. Phosphorylation of HMGR by PrK led to HMGR inactivation, whereas dephosphorylation by PrP led to HMGR activation. Calmodulin served as indirect HMGR activator through activation of PrP. The system represented a concerted regulatory mechanism of the enzymes for rubber biosynthesis and hence the rubber yield.
