Research work on barley varietal improvement has been carried out since 1993 at Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University. The objective is to develop barley varieties with high yield and good seed quality which are able to adapt well under growing conditions in the northern part of Thailand. Two methods of development were employed, including (a) evaluation and selection of introduced advanced lines and (b) developing breeding materials by crossing among varieties. After two years of yield and agronomic character assessment of advanced lines, 10 promissing lines with high yield potential were tested in 1996-1997 growing season at three different locations, namely, Chiang Mai University, Lampang Agricultural Research and Training Center and Boon Rawd Brewery Co.Ltd. farm in Chiang Rai. Results showed that four promising lines, BCMU96-1, BCMU96-2, BCMU96-5, and BCMU96-9 performed better than check varieties (BRB2 and BRB9). Evaluation and selection of F3 generation also revealed that good agronomic traits as well as grain yield were improved substantially among the segregating lines. Crosses which gave these good selected lines involved StirlingXBRB2, StirlingXBRB9, BRB2XBRB9, LARTC-BL 9001XBRB2 and SMGBLS 89706XBRB9.
