Efficacy test of some herbicides used as preemergence applied before planting for the control of some major weeds in pineapple was carried out at Amphoe Hua-Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Ban-Bung, Chon Buri during April and November in 1995. It was found that hexazinone at the rates of 90-360 g ai/rai and hexazinone+diuron at 90+360 g ai/rai sprayed covering soil surface at 2 weeks before planting the pineapple gave a good control on some grasses, broadleaf weeds and sedges for up to 8 weeks after application. The efficacy of hexazinone+diuron at 90+360 g ai/rai was found to be as good as bromacil, the standard herbicide, which was applied at 360 g ai/rai after planting the pineapple. The results of this study showed no phytotoxicity on pineapple from the tested herbicides as evaluated from phytotoxicity visual rating index and the growth of pineapple, including the pineapple weight collected from the treated plots which was higher than from the untreated plot for about 49.11 percent and 74.03 percent from the experiments at Amphoe Ban-Bung, Chon Buri and Amphoe Hua-Hin, Prachuap khiri Khan, respectively.
